Roger A. Swaney

Roger Allen Swaney, 86, of Hopkins, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at a healthcare center in Maryville, Missouri.

Roger was born west of Hopkins on May 24, 1939, to Roy Henry and Mary U. (Fuller) Swaney. He attended school in Hopkins and was a lifelong resident of the area, living in the same house for 60 years.

Roger worked for Turner Asphalt of Hopkins, then for Loch Sand and Construction of Maryville. Later, he opened and operated Swaney Repair, where he fixed farm and construction equipment in the Hopkins area. The love he had for his community and family was shown everyday of his life. 

On February 10, 1963, at the Methodist Church in Gaynor, Missouri, Roger was united in marriage to Patricia S. Spalding, who survives him at their home.

Roger was a member of the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church in Hopkins. He liked horses/mules and rode for many years as a member of the Hopkins Saddle Club. He also built, owned, and raced cars at the Mount Ayr Racetrack for several years. Roger had a love for tractors, especially Farmalls and Case, and built and showed them in the area. He enjoyed visits from his grandkids, helping with his tractors, and throwing rocks from the bridge.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Norma Swaim, sister-in-law Carol Spalding, and brother-in-law Carl Lewis.

Survivors include his wife, Pat of the home, his sister Joyce Lewis of Maryville, Missouri, and his brother Doyle “Dick” (Allene) Swaney. Roger is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Bill Spalding and Jerry Spalding, his daughter Rhonda Swaney of Maryville, Missouri, and his two sons, Scott (Susie) Swaney of Carbondale, Kansas, and Steven (Carrie) Swaney of Blair, Nebraska. Roger leaves behind seven grandchildren: April, Hannah, Erin, Skyler (Hanna), Payton, Corryn, and Addisyn, as well as two great-grandsons, Kayden and Henry. Several nieces, and nephews. 

Roger has been cremated under the care of Bram Funeral Home in Maryville, Missouri.

A private family celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Hopkins Community Building, Hopkins, Missouri. The family will gather at 11:00 AM, for lunch, and doors to the building will open at 2:00 PM, for all who would like to celebrate Roger’s life. His remains will be scattered at a later time.
