John Gerald Schieber

John Gerald "Jerry" Schieber, 95, passed peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, at Village Care Center with family by his side. Jerry was born on May 13, 1931, to Paul and Magdalene Schieber in Conception, MO. He graduated from St. Benedict's High School and then helped on the family farm.

Jerry served in the Korean War. After being honorably discharged he returned home to work on the farm. He became a carpenter and farm hand at the Conception Abbey. In 196l, he worked at the Conception Post Office, became the Postmaster and served for 31 years until his retirement. He continued to farm the family farm with his brother-in-law, Dick Henry.

Jerry married Rita Zirfas on May 4, 1957, at Conception Abbey Basilica and they shared 67 wonderful years together before she passed on December 20, 2024.

He enjoyed farming, playing cards, woodworking, and leisurely drives around the Tri-C area. He especially enjoyed attending all sports and activities of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Columba Church, Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion Tri-C Memorial Post 464 where he was a member for 73 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers Jim, Dennis, and Tony, sisters Marilyn Jermain and Peachie Schmitz, sister-in-law Cleanne Schieber and brother-in-laws Dick Henry and Gene Effinger and great-granddaughter Kayli Luke.

Survivors include his children and grandchildren : Donna (Kevin) Barmann, Maryville, MO, Tara (Jesse) LeMar; Sharon (Hal) Dowis, Grant City, MO, Ashley Briner, Brett Dowis; Darrell (Sheila) Schieber, Conception, MO, Derrick Schieber, Darcy (Ethan) Richardson, Danae (Alex) Holtman; Randy (Debra) Schieber, Conception Jct., MO, Logan (Tamra) Schieber, Shelbi (Curtis) Luke, Clayton (Kelly) Schieber, and 17 great grandchildren. Siblings include twin brother Harry (Mary) Schieber, Kate Henry, Paul (Susie) Schieber, Liz Effinger, Ray (Liz) Schieber, Dette (Stephen) Meyer, Kenny Schieber, and Diane (Harv) VanNordstrand. Sister-in -laws include Diane Schieber and Molly Schieber, brother-in-laws Ray Jermain and Gerald Schmitz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to St. Columba Catholic Church or Conception Abbey. Arrangements are under the care of Bram Funeral Home.

A parish rosary will be held at St. Columba Catholic Church at 6:00 pm on May 26, 2026. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 7:30 pm. A memorial mass will be held the next day at 10:00 am at the same location. The burial will be held at St. Columba Catholic Cemetery with military honors and Tri-C American Legion Post 464 following the memorial mass.
