John Leonard Schenkel

John Leonard Schenkel was born in Maryville, MO to Otis Charles and Addie Marie (Harding) Schenkel on July 14, 1943. He died on August 28, 2026, secure in the love of his family at Oak Pointe Senior Living.

John attended Lasher School which was one mile from his home through seventh grade. Many times he and his siblings walked to school or rode their pony. When Lasher closed in 1957, he then attended Horace Mann School for eighth grade. He transferred to Maryville High School as a freshman where he was active in FFA and served as the chapter president. After graduating from MHS, he began his career as a third-generation farmer with row crops, cattle and hogs while working part-time for a few early years at King’s Café & Gas Station.

John and Sue Goforth were married on July 22, 1961, and after a year of apartment living they moved to the family farm home place where they resided for over 60 years before moving to Oak Pointe Senior Living in 2024. They celebrated their 65 th Anniversary on July 22, 2026.

Much of John’s life centered around farm life and family. He served as Cubmaster for Pack 11. He co-hosted many wiener roasts and hayrides for church youth and other groups. John was active in the Maryville JayCees organization and was a Life Member of Elks Lodge #760. He served on the Agricultural Advisory committee for U.S. Representative Tom Coleman. In 1971, he was recognized with the Nodaway County Outstanding Young Farmer award. John served several terms and was president of the Polk Township Board and the Polk Township Fire District Board during the early stages of partnership between the township and city. In 2026 John and Sue were inducted into the Nodaway County Agriculture Hall of Fame.

John was predeceased by his parents, sisters; Daisy Ruth Schenkel Workman and Ruby Lou Schenkel Hontz and infant brother, Otis Charles Schenkel, Jr. He is survived by his wife of the home; sister, Edith Marie Schenkel Robbins; brother Kenny Schenkel; children and their spouses: Teresa (Terri) Schenkel Lloyd (Don); Jefferson City, MO; John Alan Schenkel (Bev), Maryville; Cindy Lynn Schenkel Carpenter (Gary); Milton, FL; and Steven Wayne Schenkel (Christine), Maryville; Nine grandchildren; Chris (Amy) Lloyd ; Abby Lloyd (Kalie Shanks}; Matthew (Caroline) Carpenter; Joshua (Chrissy) Carpenter; Sidney (Heath) Robinson; John G. (Katie) Schenkel; Parker, Cameron and Bethany Schenkel; nine great- grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank his caregivers for their compassionate care during his 2½ years at Oak Pointe.

Visitation will be on Friday, Sept. 4, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Bram Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Saturday morning, Sept. 5 at 11:00 a.m. at First Christian Church. Burial will follow at Nodaway Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Nodaway County Cattlemen’s Association for Agriculture Scholarships or their ‘Beef for Schools’ program.
