Outside of his professional life, Jim was an avid collector of coins, knives, and guns; he recently sold his collections. He had a deep love for birds, particularly purple martins, and was known for his compassion towards animals, often rescuing dogs in need. His love for farming and rocket building as part of the science curriculum brought him immense joy.

He also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Allen Heck of Saint Joseph, MO, step-grandchildren Shana Culp and Jackson Culp, numerous nieces and nephews, and his long-time friend and companion, Donna Matlock of Lebo, KS.
