Barbara Kay Mackey, 72, of Maryville, Missouri, died Friday, May 30, 2025, at the Maryville Living Center after a long illness.
Barbara was born on June 6, 1952, in Burlington, Iowa to Everett W. and Doris J. Carlson Summers. Her parents preceded her in death.
She graduated from Burlington High School, class of 1970. In 1972 she earned her AA degree at Southeastern Community College. She then attended the University of Iowa and graduated in Dec. 1974, earning a BA in Math education.
In 1975, Barbara began her teaching career in Albia, Iowa. She taught math at Albia Community High School for 33 years, retiring in 2008. During that time, she met and married George P. Mackey on December 15, 1984.
Her interests were traveling, especially in the Yellowstone and Teton National Park areas, fishing, music and historical research. She loved spending time with family and her puppies, Nicki and Maggie.
She was a former member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, NEA, ISEA, Albia Community Education Association, Friends of the Prairie Learning Center, AARP, Yellowstone Park Foundation, Yellowstone Association, and Yellowstone Forever.
She is survived by her husband, George, of Maryville, one stepson, Bradley Joe Mackey, Olathe, Kansas, her sister, Lynda J. (Dan) Henry, Chandler, Arizona, grandsons, Blake, Boyd (aka BO), Kade, and Luke, her niece, Briana (Ben), brother-in-law, Boyd W. (Norma) Mackey, Jr., and her cousin, Rita Carlson, Des Moines, Iowa.
Barbara has been cremated under the care of the Bram Funeral Home, Maryville, Missouri.
No services are planned at this time. She will be interred at a later date in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville, Missouri.
